Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, also known as Coach Prime, has turned the Buffaloes’ football program around in two years. Before Sanders arrived two seasons ago, Colorado was viewed as one of the worst Division I football programs in the nation. Since then, Coach Prime has turned it into a Big 12 championship contender and a premier destination for top recruits.
Part of the reason Sanders has been able to turn the program around is due to the culture he has instilled among the players and coaching staff. On Thursday, he appeared on “Say What Needs To Be Said” on YouTube. In the episode, Sanders was candid about his feelings about his team’s off-field discipline, particularly their good grades.
“Yeah, you know, let me take the football part first,” Deion Sanders said (Timestamp 10:30). “The football part, thank God, our GPA’s been the highest in the history of this school in the last two semesters, and I’m proud of that. Our kids ain’t going to jail. Our kids ain’t in no problem. We have some good, respectable, yes sir, no sir type of kids in the building.
“I know some do they thing. You can be that, but be it in the dark, don’t be it in the light now. I’m so proud of them on the field, off the field, and the coaching staff. We have so many former pros that coached or played. There’s so much respect because these kids understand, man, this guy was in the light. This guy was there.”

Colorado Buffaloes Players Speak About Coach Prime’s Return
On Monday, Coach Prime held a press conference with the Colorado medical team. He revealed that he underwent surgery to have his bladder removed after a cancerous tumor was discovered on it. The recovery period was difficult, but Sanders is now ready to return to his coaching duties.
While Sanders expressed pride in his players for their off-field dedication, his players have just as much pride in him. Following his return, several Colorado Buffaloes players spoke with the media, expressing how happy they are that Coach Prime is back in Colorado and with the team.
Cornerback DJ McKinney summed up his feelings and how the rest of the team feels in a short comment on Wednesday.
“Honestly, just having Coach Prime’s presence back in the building is an amazing feeling,” McKinney said. “I feel like everybody just has a chip on their shoulder.”
The Colorado Buffaloes are in training camp and are preparing for their Week 1 game against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29.
