Coach Prime Gets Real on Why He Asked Former Colorado WR Asaad Waseem To Transfer

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders made his feelings known as to why he asked and supported wide receiver Asaad Waseem to transfer.

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is known for capitalizing on the transfer portal to bolster his team’s roster. That said, Coach Prime sometimes finds himself facing the negative side of the portal.

Buffaloes wide receiver Asaad Waseem entered the transfer portal in search of greener pastures. Sanders, despite his displeasure at the news, offered a graceful response to Waseem’s exit and shared a candid explanation of his role in the incident.

Deion Sanders Shares Touching Message as Asaad Waseem Makes Exit

Coach Prime shared a cryptic tweet on Tuesday, calling out players who used the transfer portal for monetary benefit.

“To many of the Portal Young Men that’s looking & searching for the right situation. You’re gonna get vetted thoroughly by us and then I pray u know the difference of being offered a bag & being offered a BLESSING. Ask Grandma-nem what I mean.”

However, when Waseem chose to leave Colorado, Sanders responded with support.

“This kid can flat out play. He’s caught in the numbers game with us and I wanted him to go and have a chance to START elsewhere because I care about him. Great young man who grew a lot with our program and a Florida boy! Love ya man. Remember our last conversation and go get it!”

Sanders’ response showed his caring nature and a willingness to put his players’ needs above his own. His tweet received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and a comment from Waseem’s father.

“Forever Grateful as a parent and I can testify you cared about my son on and off the field. I saw the growth as a player and as [a] man which is what you promised me when we met. You kept your word. San Antonio is my hometown so if you need anything let me know.”

    Why Did Waseem Leave Colorado?

Despite being a talented player, Waseem hardly received playing time during his two seasons with the Buffs. The wide receiver played in just two games during the 2023 season and had no playing time in the 2024 regular season.

Waseem’s motivations are likely driven by a desire to gain more on-field experience and develop his talents. With his best achievements still coming from his high school years, Waseem’s future as a football player after college is uncertain.

Waseem’s decision to transfer is no doubt a wise one. He will hopefully join a program that will grant him more time on the field, help develop his skills, and raise his stock.
