UCLA Coach Foster Talks QB Luke Duncan’s Progress

“There was a lot of outside noise,” Foster said after Saturday’s spring event at the Rose Bowl, stressing that all that matters is that the team competes and grows together.- While not a formal scrimmage, the spring showcase saw the team play and practice with great spirit and effort throughout the spring.

Foster pointed to sophomore quarterback Luke Duncan and described his noticeable growth: “He’s been competing day in and day out,” adding that Duncan has “approached spring the right way.” Duncan’s newfound level of poise and command on the field seems to imply that he is now taking his leadership role seriously and could position himself very well for the 2025 rotation.

While Duncan continues to improve, the quarterback room will only get more competitive. Nico Iamaleava, a very important transfer, showed up at the showcase with his brother Madden. Even though Iamaleava did not participate in the drills, his mere presence is an exciting development for the program.

Foster admits it will be challenging to integrate transfers who missed spring practice, but remains optimistic: “We just did a good job of finding a way to get these guys to gel.”

Foster believes that the quarterback battle and overall depth of the roster can only improve the Bruins as they enter Big Ten play. “The camaraderie and chemistry bode well for us.” With a balanced offense, a veteran defense, and renewed energy, Foster sees UCLA entering the top 25 in 2025. There will be a real battle under center, yet that is exactly what the Bruins need.

Heading into summer workouts and eventually fall camp, Foster trusts in player-led growth and internal leadership to direct the team’s course.

“We’re in a pretty good place,” he said. And with two gifted quarterbacks fighting for the limelight, the future looks bright for UCLA at that position.

Foster’s words mainly convey tactical updates; conversely, they also communicate a change in culture in Westwood. Competition, cohesion, and resilience are some of the terms Foster used as he set UCLA on a player-driven path with some sense of renewed purpose.

Chemistry has been one of his points of emphasis, even with the transfers, showing his grasp of a changing landscape in college football today. With guys like Luke Duncan stepping up and top-tier talent like Nico Iamaleava entering the fold, the quarterback room is almost like a metaphor for the broader changes.

The Mark Foster leadership style is a mixture of gritty old-school masculinity and modern-day adaptability, which could very well define the upcoming 2025 UCLA season.
