Quarterback CJ Carr made his debut for both college football and his program, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. On Sunday, Aug. 31, Carr got his first taste of football at the next level, as coach Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish took on coach Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes in away territory to open their 2025 campaign.
However, as the game rolled on, many collegiate football fans expressed their disappointment with Carr on social media. They deemed his play during the first quarter ‘unsatisfactory,’ given the kind of quarterback he was in high school and the standard that Notre Dame has. Miami jumped to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter of the high-intensity game.
College football fans online came together to call for Carr to be benched for the rest of the Fighting Irish’s 2025 season-opener.
“Bench Cj Carr, this is bad,” one user pleaded.
“CJ Carr looks scared as f*ck,” another user shared.
“Will be interested to see how CJ Carr finishes this game in depth of target. Everything feels short, which is fine for now. But Irish unlikely to be able to win that way,” a user explained.
Some X/Twitter users were impressed with how Carr played, claiming that the young talent was adapting to the game.
“CJ Carr has been ok so far, I’m actually surprised,” one fan said.
“CJ Carr. That’s it. That’s the entire tweet,” another fan wrote.
“CJ Carr is the best young QB in college football,” a fan claimed.
Carr committed to play for the Fighting Irish in June 2022 when he was still a junior in high school football. He concluded his time at Saline High School during the 2024 season and was a four-star recruit ranked 45th among all prospects by 247Sports.

CJ Carr may have won back the trust of Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans with his game-tying play
It seems CJ Carr was able to win back some fans with a play he did in the second quarter of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish-Miami Hurricanes season-opener on Sunday.
At the 5:23 mark of the period, Carr found fellow freshman Micah Gilbert for a seven-yard touchdown that momentarily tied the game. Carr and company now look to carry that momentum to try and snag a win over the Hurricanes.
