New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is pulling back the curtain on Bill Belichick’s coaching methods.
The talented young defender made his NFL debut in 2023, but his rookie season was cut short due to a torn labrum that required season-ending surgery. After a determined recovery, Gonzalez returned in 2024 with a chip on his shoulder, ready to dominate on the field.

Christian Gonzalez Praises Bill Belichick’s Mentorship
Gonzalez wrapped up the 2024 season with an impressive stat line — 59 total tackles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, and 11 passes defended.
He even notched his first career touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in a standout performance last November. But beyond his on-field success, Gonzalez recently opened up about Belichick’s coaching philosophy.
Before taking over at North Carolina, Belichick spent an incredible 23 seasons leading the New England Patriots, racking up the most Super Bowl wins (6). His final season in Foxborough coincided with Gonzalez’s rookie year, making for an eye-opening introduction to the league.
During a conversation on the Frat Rules Podcast, the former Oregon Ducks cornerback reflected on how drastically different his NFL experience was from college.
Having never played under a coach quite like Belichick, Gonzalez quickly realized that the legendary coach’s approach was unlike anything he had encountered before.
“Me going into that, he done coached all of them, so I ain’t nobody. You just go in, head down, and just grind him,” Gonzalez said.
“He was a very different coach, a coach I ain’t never played for. He’s super old school. You mess up in practice, he brings it in front of everybody. He’s cussing you out mid. As a team leader, what you’re doing, like, this bad.”

Gonzalez didn’t escape Belichick’s infamous tough-love coaching style either. In fact, he admitted to being on the receiving end of some of Belichick’s brutal practice sessions, where no player, not even a first-round pick, was spared.
“Oh, yeah. I was bad. Oh, yeah. And I was a first-round pick, so they going to get me in front of everybody every time,” he added.
Belichick took a year off after the 2023 season, but he’s coming back to coach and will lead the University of North Carolina in the 2025 season.
Gonzalez Reveals the Lessons He Learned From Belichick
The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach was pivotal in shaping Gonzalez into a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Though their time together was brief, the young cornerback still carries valuable lessons from Belichick’s coaching period.
During his appearance on the Richard Sherman Podcast, Gonzalez shared one particular habit of the 72-year-old coach, something Belichick drilled into the team before every game.
Christian Gonzalez says former #Patriots HC Bill Belichick taught him one very important thing his rookie season.
“One thing Belichick always talked about, he would always ask us who is the (opponent’s) offensive coordinator. My rookie year… at first I didn’t understand like… pic.twitter.com/IZXPfNAa25

“One thing Belichick always talked about, he would always ask us, ‘Who’s the offensive coordinator?'” Gonzalez said. “My rookie year, I’m like, “OK, he’s the offensive coordinator. So what?’ Now, in the offseason, I was able to learn that this offensive coordinator came from this tree. They did this. They like to attack a corner like me this way. That type of thing I was able to pick up on this offseason.”

Moreover, Gonzalez’s impact didn’t go unnoticed by Belichick himself. In fact, the legendary coach singled him out as the only Patriots player to earn a spot on his prestigious “All-Belichick Team” in 2024.
