In the world of college football, legacies often carry immense weight, and few names resonate as powerfully as Charles Woodson. The 1997 Heisman Trophy winner, a Michigan legend, set a towering standard as the first primarily defensive player to claim the award.
Now, his son, Charles Woodson Jr., a 2027 4-star defensive back, is stepping into the spotlight, earning a scholarship offer from the Wolverines and sparking comparisons to his father’s storied career.
A Legacy Offer: Michigan Welcomes Woodson Jr.
The recruitment of Charles Woodson Jr. gained significant momentum as the University of Michigan extended a scholarship offer to the 2027 4-star defensive back.

Athletically, size-wise, and characteristic of a young man with the right potential to be a football safety player, that is what can be said of Woodson Jr. During the previous year of 2024 when he was just a sophomore in high school, he made 53 tackles, two pass breakups, and an interception, based on a report by On3.
Although he is less bulky than his father, whose body size was 6’1’’, 200 pounds when he was playing for Michigan, Woodson Jr.’s very first varsity minutes as a freshman in 2023 already showed the same flair of playmaking that his father was known for during his career.
Woodson’s various roles encompassing cornerback, wide receiver, and punt return, made nin an outstanding one that reached the peak in a 1997 season when he had seven interceptions and a national championship.
Woodson Jr., however, is not required to manage both the defensive and offensive lines at this point, but at the very least, he knows where to cover, which points out his football intelligence, the same as his father’s, and made him a Hall of Famer.
Measuring Up: Can Junior Replicate the Heisman Magic?
Charles Woodson Sr.’s 1997 Heisman campaign was a masterclass in impact, with game-changing plays like his one-handed interception against Michigan State and a punt return touchdown against Ohio State.
He finished his Michigan career with 18 interceptions, still second all-time at the school, and became a blueprint for defensive backs with offensive flair.
Woodson Jr. is carving his own path. His current ranking as the 243rd overall prospect in the 2027 class by 247Sports. This reflects excellent but not elite status, unlike his father, who was Ohio’s “Mr. Football” as a senior.
Woodson Jr.’s recruiting profile is still developing, though, with Michigan’s offer signaling confidence in his potential to grow into a lockdown safety.
The weight of the Woodson name is impossible to ignore, but Junior’s early statistics and athleticism indicate he’s ready for the pressure. If he could add weight and polish his skills over the next two years, he could be reminiscent of his father in that he can take over in the big moment, although the Heisman might be a high bar.
This is just the beginning for Woodson Jr., but it’s also very full circle in becoming public with the Michigan offer.

He’s not yet to the Heisman-winning level set by his father, but his defensive instincts and family legacy make him a prospect to monitor in the 2027 class. The Wolverines’ fans will be hoping history repeats itself.
