Following the Rose Bowl, NFL legend Chad Johnson had high praise for Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. While appearing on the “Nightcap” podcast alongside Shannon Sharpe, Johnson explained how he believed that Smith was already the best receiving prospect in the country despite only being a freshman at Ohio State.
The Buckeyes defeated the Oregon Ducks in dominant fashion by a score of 41-21 to advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals to face the Texas Longhorns. Against Oregon, Smith had seven receptions for 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns, strongly showcasing his talents even as a freshman.

He further added that Smith, “Even as a freshman, probably the number one receiver in the country right now.”
Smith and Ohio State Buckeyes’ Future Outlook
Smith has had a standout season in his first year with the Buckeyes. On the year, he has accumulated 1,224 receiving yards and 15 total touchdowns.
Only a freshman, Smith has the potential to be a key piece of the Buckeyes’ future going forward. In addition, should he continue at this rate, it’s possible that Smith will become one of the top NFL prospects by the time he declares for the draft.
Nevertheless, in the current day, Ohio State (ranked No. 8 in the CFP format) remains alive in the College Football Playoff, with Texas (No. 5) next on the schedule.
The previously mentioned game between the Buckeyes and Longhorns will take place on Jan. 10, 2025, from the home of the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Texas. The winner of the contest will advance to the College Football Playoff final on Jan. 20 and have a chance to hoist this year’s national championship.
