College football analyst Josh Pate recently detailed who he thinks will be the starting quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide next year. While discussing QB competitions around the country for next year on the “Josh Pate’s College Football Show,” Pate gave his prediction for ‘Bama’s QB1.
With Alabama losing longtime starter Jalen Milroe to the 2025 NFL Draft later this April, questions loom in Tuscaloosa about who will lead the 2025 offense.
Who Does Josh Pate Predict As Alabama QB1?
In a recent episode of his podcast, Josh Pate made clear that he believes Ty Simpson was in prime position to win the Crimson Tide’s quarterback competition this year. The video was posted in full on the “Josh Pate’s College Football Show” YouTube account.
“[I] gotta talk about Alabama,” Pate started. “I have done some digging—the shovels over here in the corner—I think Ty Simpson’s the overwhelming favorite to win that starting job.
“I know there’s going to be a lot of talk, as there should be, about the fact that [Kalen] DeBoer when he was at Washington, he recruited Austin Mack. And Ryan Grubb was there and they recruited Austin Mack…Now, he’s transferred to Alabama and he’s been there a year. Knowing all that, I’m telling you I think it’s Ty Simpson’s job to lose,” Pate stated.
Who Will Start At QB For The Alabama Crimson Tide?
As Pate alluded to, Austin Mack also appears to be in contention to start at quarterback for the Crimson Tide next year.
This past year, neither Simpson nor Mack played much competitive football for ‘Bama, as they were both behind Milroe in the depth chart. Simpson completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 167 passing yards while also rushing for 44 yards on eight carries, scoring a rushing touchdown in the process.

Meanwhile, Mack completed two of his three passes for 39 yards and one passing touchdown.
While only time will tell who takes the starting job next year, Pate seems to think Simpson will lead the Crimson Tide on opening day when they travel to Tallahassee and take on Florida State.
