Quarterback Carson Beck has had great success in the past five years with coach Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs. After all this, he decided to transfer and play out his sixth and final year of college football eligibility with coach Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes, making his commitment on Jan. 10 of this year. This development came a day after he placed his name in the transfer portal.
With the accomplishments and the successful time he has had with the Bulldogs, it is a distinct decision for Beck not to ride his college career into the sunset at the University of Georgia. Having said this, there were several factors that led to his decision, some of which were not under his control.
The 23-year-old suffered a season-ending elbow injury in the 2024 collegiate football season. This happened during an SEC championship game for the Bulldogs, where he still saw his team defeat the Texas Longhorns and win the 2024 conference championship for their second time this decade.
The Bulldogs were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2024 college football national tournament while competing without the services of Beck. Georgia succumbed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by 13 points, 23-10, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
As Beck entered what was supposed to be an offseason for him, wherein he was a projected high pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the senior decided to play out a final year at college, presumably to improve his draft stock. As per The Palm Beach Post, Beck’s injury had several mock drafts seeing him get selected in the first round, all the way to the third round.
Should he have taken the risk and gotten drafted to a lower pick than expected, Beck could’ve been making less money with his starting NFL contract than at the University of Miami. His injury would’ve also set him back from participating in the draft combine and in pre-draft workouts. So now, Beck looks to start anew with a new team in his last year of college before moving on to the league.
