He completed 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. While those numbers reflect a productive outing, one of those turnovers proved costly. Cameras caught Beck appearing visibly frustrated afterward, seemingly directing that frustration toward wide receiver Joshisa Trader.

Beck led Miami with confidence through much of the contest, keeping the Hurricanes in it against an aggressive SMU defense. Yet, the image of him visibly upset on the sidelines dominated the conversation afterward.
For a player whose leadership has already been questioned this season, this wasn’t the kind of body language or behavior that silences critics. Overall, Beck’s season remains statistically impressive.
He’s thrown for more than 1,600 yards, with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His arm talent and ability to push the ball downfield are clear strengths. But the narrative around him has shifted in recent weeks, from his production to his temperament.

Beck’s behavior under pressure has been a recurring topic ever since Miami’s loss to Louisville earlier in the season. After that defeat, he appeared to deflect blame for a costly interception, suggesting that a receiver ran the wrong route.
That explanation drew criticism from former NFL MVP Cam Newton, who highlighted the importance of leadership and accountability for quarterbacks. Newton argued that a quarterback’s role extends far beyond physical execution.
It’s about owning mistakes, maintaining trust, and setting the tone for the team. In his view, even subtle hints of blame can damage relationships in the locker room and make teammates question a leader’s character.
“Mr. Beck, when you’re getting paid, how you’re getting paid, brother, that stat line doesn’t look conducive to what you’re getting paid. So be very, very careful, shhh. Take the high road,” Newton said.
Newton’s broader message was that great quarterbacks take full responsibility, even when the error isn’t entirely their own. Doing so earns respect, strengthens unity, and demonstrates maturity under pressure.
