Demond Williams Jr. entered the NCAA transfer portal with a “do-not-contact” tag despite being signed to an agreement with Washington to play the 2026 season with the Huskies. Because of his tag, no program can talk to him without his invitation as per the NCAA rules.
This is what Williams said while announcing his decision to enter the transfer portal:
“First, I want to thank everyone in the Washington program for everything they have done for me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Husky Nation. … I have to do what is best for me and my future. After much thought and prayer, I will be entering the transfer portal.”
While Washington did put Williams Jr. in the transfer portal because of the request, he could face legal consequences if he were in breach of contract.

Can Washington Sue Demond Williams Jr.?
Yes, Washington can, and they are already exploring avenues to sue Demong Williams Jr. With the help of the law, they might compel Williams Jr. to honor the contract or seek damages caused to the program with the quarterback leaving.
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger, the program is already in contact with Big Ten about the situation and they believe the contract with Williams was binding. Dellenger also reported that Washington suspects that another program reached out to Williams after he signed a new deal with the program, an indication of possible tampering with the player, which is strictly against the NCAA rules.
The language in Williams’ contract is similar to the template used in the two-year NIL agreement signed by former Badgers defender Xavier Lucas with Wisconsin. At the time, Lucas said he only took action and departed for Miami after learning that the program was deliberately not putting his name in the transfer portal despite being notified. Meanwhile, the Badgers have sued Miami for potentially tampering.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Demond Williams was in line to become the highest paid quarterback in the franchise history before the surprising transfer portal decision came to light.
It remains to be seen if Williams will be compelled to perform for Washington, pay damages to Washington for breaking the agreement or does he comes out unscathed.
