“My Idol Was Talking Down On Me”: Cam Newton Gets Candid on Deion Sanders’ Past Criticism During Playing Days

NFL legend Cam Newton is very open about idolizing Colorado head coach Deion Sanders growing up. Back then, Sanders had built a career as one of the greatest cornerbacks in history, and even though he played in a different position, Newton still wanted to emulate Sanders.

However, during an episode of his “4th&1 With Cam Newton” podcast, the former quarterback revealed that during his playing days, he received some harsh criticism from none other than his idol, Prime Time Deion Sanders.

“But at the same time when I was playing my idol was talking down on me,” Newton said. “Deion.” (17:18)

“A guy that I had a lot of respect for talked down on me,” he continued. “But now looking at it from this lens it’s like bro, you got a job to do.”

Then, his co-host, OG Collins, asked the NFL great how he felt about Sanders criticizing him and Cam Newton admitted that it was devastating for him.

“It was the messenger. It wasn’t the message,” Newton said. “But where I am at now, doing what I’m doing now and then understanding that, hey, the weight of your voice is really louder or more impactful or heavier than you think, Yes, I get it. Because when I’m a fan of the Sanders family, I’m a fan of Shedeur, but there’s been obviousness where it’s like, “Hey, bro, you be but I’m just doing my job, bro.”

The story was prompted when Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts faced much criticism, including from Cam Newton, who Hurts himself idolized.

Cam Newton Defended ‘Nepotism’ From Deion Sanders Towards Shedeur Sanders

Despite getting talked down on by his hero, Cam Newton has defended Deion Sanders as the head coach of Colorado multiple times, especially when it came to Coach Prime’s son, Shedeur.

During an appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” Newton noted that he “believes” in nepotism and what Deion Sanders was doing in Boulder for his sons.

“I believe in nepotism. I believe everything that you’re doing, you’ve got to put your people on,” Newton said.

However, he also criticized the Sanders family and Shedeur’s future in the NFL, whether or not the younger Sanders can be coached by another person other than his father. For now, that is still up for debate as Shedeur battles for the coveted QB1 spot with the Cleveland Browns.
