There’s a common saying that Bears fans don’t like hearing criticism about their players, whether from local media, national reporters, or opposing fans. So, things got a bit heated when former NFL player and current podcaster Ross Tucker commented about Caleb Williams, which pushed Bears fans over the edge.
Though his take didn’t sit well with many on social media, former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly came to Tucker’s defense. Kelly, who gave Williams a fourth-round grade before the Chicago Bears selected him No. 1 overall, has consistently raised concerns about the quarterback’s mental toughness, decision-making, and leadership.

Ex-NFL Scout Defends Caleb Williams Critique, Ross Tucker, as Fans and Media Clash Online
The debate reignited when NFL analyst Ross Tucker appeared on WSCR’s Mully & Haugh and expressed doubts about Williams, stating, “I have major concerns about Caleb Williams. It feels to me like more often than not, he does the wrong thing. This isn’t a talent thing … I feel like he either gets really bad advice or his awareness rating on Madden needs to go down like 30 points.”

Kelly quickly responded, doubling down on his assessment: “There are reasons I put a 4th-round pre-draft grade on Caleb Williams and labeled him as a bust 107 days before the Bears selected him.”
Long before the Chicago Bears picked Williams as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Daniel Kelly had already made headlines by calling him a “100% bust.” And now, he’s standing firm on that opinion.
Kelly didn’t just question Williams’ talent. He also criticized the quarterback for skipping medical testing at the NFL Combine. He raised concerns about Williams’ father playing a major role in contract negotiations, calling it a serious red flag.
Back then, Bears fans didn’t take his words lightly. They came out in full force, slamming Kelly’s take and defending their new quarterback. But now, with Ross Tucker joining the conversation, Kelly felt inspired to speak out again. His criticism grew stronger after NFL analyst Joe Frascella shared a video of Williams connecting with Rome Odunze in practice.
Caleb Williams doesn’t have what it takes from the neck up. He wants to do his own thing and he’s too moody and too mentally fragile. The more things don’t go his way and the more he loses, the moodier he becomes. All the intel was public and it was out there pre-draft and the…

When he shared that video, he said Williams looked “too moody and too mentally fragile,” adding that things would likely get worse when challenges hit. According to Kelly, Chicago overlooked several red flags, and now, they may have to live with the consequences.

Overall, Kelly seems determined to remind critics that he predicted Williams would be a fourth-round pick and a bust well before the Bears selected him—and that he was correct.
