BYU Adds Former Stanford QB Bear Bachmeier As Depth Chart Faces Spring Shake-Up

BYU’s quarterback room just became a lot more interesting and a little more packed. The Cougars acquired a gifted new player to their squad just as spring training was coming to an end, and concerns were still present over the depth behind senior starter Jake Retzlaff.

BYU Adds Former Stanford QB Bear Bachmeier as Insurance Behind Jake Retzlaff

Bachmeier originally signed with Stanford and was a 4-star prospect in the 2025 class. However, the highly regarded signal-caller decided to use the transfer site once the Cardinals’ coaching staff changed. BYU had already recruited Bachmeier out of high school, so they went right in and got his commitment.

For the Cougars, this arrival comes at a critical moment. Even though Jake Retzlaff is the obvious favorite going into the 2025 campaign, there has been debate over the depth chart behind him during spring training.

Redshirt junior Treyson Bourguet and redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead have been vying for the backup position, but neither has established themselves as the undisputed No. 2.

The arrival of Bachmeier, who will be a true freshman in 2025 and retains all four years of eligibility, injects immediate talent and long-term potential into the quarterback room.

Bachmeier’s Potential and the Spring QB Picture

Bachmeier brings to Provo a solid pedigree. He was regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in his recruitment class and was a dual-threat quarterback known for his athleticism and powerful arm. The program’s track record of producing quarterbacks and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick’s plan influenced his choice to enroll at BYU.

Bachmeier’s skill is indisputable, even though he will require some time to get used to the college game and master the BYU offense. In the race for backups during fall camp, his presence will surely pressure Hillstead and Bourguet. Additionally, it gives BYU a quarterback of the future if Retzlaff’s eligibility expires following the 2025 campaign.

The inclusion of Bachmeier now adds another dynamic element to this group. Reports from spring camp said that Retzlaff appeared at ease and composed, progressing in his growth. Hillstead also had moments of genius, and Bourguet maintained a constant presence.

Bear Bachmeier’s arrival can be seen as a major improvement to BYU’s quarterback depth and prospects. It creates a gifted young player who can contend for the starting position in 2026 and beyond, and it ensures Retzlaff’s availability for the forthcoming campaign.

According to head coach Kalani Sitake and his staff, every position benefits from competition, and the quarterback room is no different.
