College football analyst John Talty believes that star high school quarterback Bryce Underwood’s switch to the Michigan Wolverines is not the worst thing that could have happened to the LSU Tigers program.
While discussing the situation ahead of the 2025 college football campaign, Talty outlined how missing out on Underwood will save LSU a lot of money, which the program can now use to build a deeper and stronger roster.
In early 2024, Underwood committed to playing college football at Louisiana State University for the Tigers program. However, later that year, he announced that he would change his decision and commit to the University of Michigan and the Wolverines.

What Did John Talty Say About Bryce Underwood and LSU?
Talty clarified that losing out on Underwood was a difficult situation for LSU. The comments were made on the 247sports Instagram account.

“It was a huge blow right [Underwood changing his commitment]. And we all know that. I think everyone on this show is a believer in Bryce’s talent, and I think that was a huge get for Michigan,” Talty stated.
However, he highlighted how the new age of college football focused on money and finances. This means that the Tigers can build a stronger overall team with less money invested in only one player.
“How you choose to use that money is going to be really important. And so, losing Bryce Underwood, which the numbers were 8-10 million total package, maybe even more… That’s significant outlay of money, and by losing Bryce, I think what they’re able to do is then be more aggressive this past transfer portal window, load up on talent across the board… the top portal class. I think that money helped in that department,” he added.
Is Losing Bryce Underwood a Positive For LSU?
Although Talty’s detailed explanation makes sense in theory, the program missed out on one of the most exciting quarterbacks in this recruiting class. Underwood is a phenomenal quarterback prospect who has the ability to develop into one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
