The Michigan Wolverines are in the middle of a rebuilding period, which started immediately after they won the 2023 national title. In 2024, their most glaring need was a quarterback, and many people around Ann Arbor feel like the arrival of Bryce Underwood will fix that. With this comes the expectation that the signal-caller will make the team nationally competitive again.
But like Ari Wasserman of On3 pointed out in his latest article this Thursday, not everything is having a top quarterback; you also need the weapons for him to operate:
“There are concerns. First, Michigan doesn’t have a proven, stud receiver. Yes, the Wolverines always have tight ends, but a youthful quarterback on which the entire team is relying to revive the passing attack? You’d hope for proven assets at receiver,” Wasserman wrote.
Wasserman is right to be worried. In 2024, only one receiver went above 500 yards for the Wolverines, and that was tight end Colston Loveland (582 yards). He’s now a player of the Chicago Bears, being the tenth overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Their second-best receiver, Tyler Morris, is now at Indiana Hoosiers, having jumped into the transfer portal during the offseason.

Sherrone Moore on Bryce Underwood’s development
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore spoke about Bryce Underwood during the Big Ten media days in July. While Underwood has had only a few months to get acquainted with Ann Arbor, Moore already feels like he has seen him grow immensely during that time.
“I think he’s grown every single day since he’s been on campus,” Moore said. “Continues to do everything he can to be. One, the best teammate he can be. Two, to be the best student he can be. Then, three, to be the best football player that he can be and quarterback that he can be for our football team.”
“He does everything the right way. He’s a great teammate, great kid, great young man,” Moore added.
The hype surrounding Bryce Underwood is so big that fans have seemingly forgotten that he’s fighting for the starting position with Mike Keene. Keene is an experienced starter with four seasons under his belt at UCF and then Fresno State. But all eyes are on Underwood, the top-rated prospect of the 2025 class.
