‘His Dad… Taught Him How To Be in the Spotlight’ — Browns CB Greg Newsome II Praises Deion Sanders for Shedeur’s NFL-Ready Poise

It’s no secret that the start of former Colorado Buffalo quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ NFL career has been controversial. Many analysts projected Sanders to be a first-round pick and one of the first players taken in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Sanders ended up sliding all the way to the fifth round before being selected by the Cleveland Browns. It’s fair to say that no fifth round has ever had more attention on them than Sanders, and one of his new teammates is commending the way he’s handled the spotlight.

Browns Cornerback Greg Newsome Praises Shedeur Sanders’ Handling of the Media

In an interview with NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II was asked about how Shedeur Sanders has been doing in Cleveland so far.

Newsome II praised the young quarterback, saying, “He’s been amazing. A sponge, I would say. It’s just crazy that a guy this young with this much notoriety can just handle media. I think his dad has really taught him how to be that guy in the spotlight and understand what comes with it.”

It’s nice to see Sanders’ teammates are already welcoming him inside the building, as players could view the noise and media attention for a fifth-round pick as a distraction more than anything.

Newsome is right about Deion Sanders as well. The Colorado Buffaloes head coach has long instilled in his players (and sons) the importance of being professional in the media.

In a recent interview with Action Sports Jacksonville, Travis Hunter, who was coached by Sanders at both Colorado and Jackson State, said that the best lesson Coach Prime ever taught him was “You got to be a professional at all times.”

The attention that comes with Shedeur is not necessarily his fault. His father is one of the most explosive and flamboyant football players of all time, so it’s not surprising that the media is so enamored with Shedeur Sanders’ young career.

Regardless of the media, Sanders has played quarterback at a high level throughout his entire career so far, and will look to do the same in Cleveland.

From what Newsome II has said, it sounds like Shedeur is focused on football and learning as much as possible, and trying to be the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns more than anything else.
