Almost a month after LSU fired Brian Kelly on Oct. 26, reports have emerged that the program may have handicapped its former head coach from taking a new job.
According to ESPN, Kelly’s attorneys alleged that LSU’s firing with or without cause has “made it nearly impossible” for the head coach to land another employment. Kelly’s representatives sent a letter to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry and board of supervisors member John H. Carmouche, in which he notified them of his intention to seek damages as permitted by law.
“As you know, there is absolutely no basis to LSU’s contrived positions that Coach Kelly was not terminated or that cause existed for such termination,” the letter read. “LSU’s conduct, including its failure to confirm that Coach Kelly was terminated without cause and its unsupported allegations of misconduct on the part of Coach Kelly, has made it nearly impossible for Coach Kelly to secure other football-related employment. LSU’s conduct continues to harm Coach Kelly, particularly during this critical hiring period.”
Kelly might be right because there have been multiple Power Five openings and the delay in termination from LSU impairs his ability to land another job.
Amid this, on Friday, the LSU board formally terminated Kelly. However, it’s unknown whether the firing was with or without cause.

Brian Kelly Wants Termination Without Cause For $54M Reason
After the 49-25 loss to Texas A&M, the LSU Tigers dropped to 5-3 on the season. Shortly afterwards, then-athletic director Scott Woodward dismissed Brian Kelly from his head coach role.
However, in November, LSU informed Kelly’s representatives that Woodward had no authority to fire Kelly while stating they had the reason to fire the head coach. Kelly was due $54 million had the firing been without cause.
In response to that, Kelly petitioned the 19th Judicial District for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (Louisiana) to change the filing and assert that he was fired without cause.
In another letter dated Nov. 19, Kelly’s attorney claims that the LSU board member told them that they’d sent a written confirmation letter that the head coach was fired without cause. However, in exchange, Carmouch wants Kelly to withdraw his petition.
The same letter added that Kelly will not withdraw his petition unless he recevies written confirmation from the LSU board that he was fired without cause.
