Anger Mounts Against Brett Yormark as Notre Dame AD’s Comments Become Point of Contention

Big 12 conference commissioner Brett Yormark is getting flak on social media for his comments on recent college football playoff snubs. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, a report by @SBJ on X/Twitter highlighted a couple of things Yormark said when he got up on stage at the IAF.

Yormark was not happy with how the fate of coach Kalani Sitake’s BYU Cougars was decided, but he is glad to see the progress the team made throughout their campaign. He also called out the athletic director of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pete Bevacqua, who recently targeted Yorkman.

College football fans online shared their criticisms of how Yormark is handling the teams in the Big 12 conference at this stage of the season.

“Thanks, commish. Great to establish that excluding an 11-1 team from your conference is ‘the right job.’ Absolutely the precedent you want to establish for the Big 12,” one user said.

“‘Progress over perfection,’ is a hilarious quote for something that has existed for over a decade, even if it is only the second year of the most recent format,” another user shared.

“From what little I know of Brett Yormark, I’m gonna go ahead and guess that he’d make Pete Bevacqua look like a choir boy if what happened with ND’s rankings happened to a Big 12 school,” another wrote.

“Brett Yormak did an awful job lobbying for BYU. What a clown,” a user claimed.

Other X users discussed the situation as a whole, wondering what exactly the schematics are for the likes of Notre Dame and BYU.

“BYU was given a clear way to make it by winning the Big 12 game. Notre Dame was put ahead of Miami for weeks and then they don’t play and it changes. In addition to Bama somehow not dropping for losing their CC game, these scenarios are different,” one user explained.

“What’s hilarious about this is that if ND was in the B12 they would be 13-0. And everyone knows it,” another fan posted.

“BYU’s wins over Utah and at Arizona were better than Aggie and Ole Miss, who only beat one good team each,” a user pointed out.

The Cougars were defeated 34-7 in the Big 12 conference championship game by coach Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech Red Raiders at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday, Dec. 6. Despite an impressive overall record of 11-1 (7-1 Big 12) in the regular season, they were ultimately snubbed for postseason play and will instead play the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Have Formally Ended Their 2025 Campaign

Similar to the BYU Cougars, coach Marcus Freeman and the rest of his 2025 Notre Dame Fighting Irish roster were eliminated from qualifying for postseason play even after they finished the year with an overall record of 10-2 without being in a conference.

With this, the team has decided to forego any chance of playing bowl games this postseason and has shifted its focus towards winning the 2026 national title.
