‘I Got Chills’—Brent Pry Shares What Happened When Metallica Visited Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech have one of the most electrifying traditions in all of college football. Every time the team takes the field at Lane Stadium, Metallica’s iconic track ‘Enter Sandman’ blares through the stadium speakers.

The band came to campus on Wednesday and played live. They ended the performance with “Enter Sandman,” which sent the whole stadium into a frenzy. Head coach Brent Pry was in the crowd, and he was in awe of what he witnessed.

Virginia Tech Coach Brent Pry Reflects on Powerful Metallica Moment and Iconic ‘Enter Sandman’ Tradition

Brent Pry spoke to Kris Budden and Ben Hartsock on SiriusXM College Sports Radio on Thursday. He described what he felt during the performance.

“Standing out on that platform, watching and listening to that, I get chills. It’s special,” he said.

“And, you know, I’m very thankful. The couple of guys that came up with using this song for our entrance are still here working at Virginia Tech. They were young guys. They also had an opportunity to meet the band yesterday, you know, along with myself. And it’s just, it’s another very cool story in, you know, in our fabric, in our history … Our guys are very, very appreciative and so very fortunate to have that type of entrance. It’s the greatest entrance in all of college football.

“And to have that, to run out of that turtle and experience that, that’s a lifetime experience, and one that they’ll never forget. So you know, I do remind them often of how fortunate they are, and I think, you know, they appreciate it, and it’s special. No better way to kick off a football game than coming out to ‘Enter Sandman’ with 70,000 jumping, going crazy and singing. They’re singing at the top of their lungs.”

Brent Pry is preparing for his fourth season in charge of the Hokies, and he’s set for some serious work amidst a squad turnover this off-season. There are a lot of new faces in the squad this year as the Hokies have a new offensive coordinator (Philip Montgomery), a new defensive coordinator (Sam Siefkes), and a new offensive line coach (Matt Moore).

Virginia Tech also lost five players to the NFL draft and 24 to the transfer portal. They also lost some to graduation, but they added 29 players of their own through the transfer portal. In total, there are about 50 new faces in the squad ahead of next season, meaning there’s work to do in order to get everybody on the same page.
