Head coach Brent Key and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are coming off a solid season, finishing with a 7-6 record for the second straight year. They are heading into their fourth year with Key at the helm. Entering the season, there has been optimism that the Yellow Jackets could be a contender in the ACC, especially after their upset win over Miami last season.
With training camp underway, the Yellow Jackets are preparing for their season opener on Aug. 29 against Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes. However, it has not been smooth sailing at practice for Brent Key’s squad. After a 125-play scrimmage on Saturday, Key spoke with the media, saying that while there were some positives, he was not satisfied with the team’s performance.
“We went 125 plays and I was planning to go about 100, but the first 100 looked like dog crap,” Brent Key said. “Everybody got a chance to get in and play and see what they could do and how they can help this football team.
“It reached about 94, but it was 115 on the turf, which his what I wanted. I wanted to see how these guys could sustain and practice through some adversity and I don’t think we did that well today. I don’t think we are anywhere close to being ready to play a football game.”
Georgia Tech football coach Brent Key was less than effusive about his team after Saturday’s scrimmage, and there is still a lot of work to be done over the next 13 days before the Jackets suit up in Colorado. Scrimmage 2 notes and more.https://t.co/L99Ci6mR3B pic.twitter.com/HqDQU5xojG

HC Brent Key Criticizes His Team for Mental Mistakes
One of the biggest issues head coach Brent Key had with his squad’s performance in Saturday’s scrimmage was the mental mistakes. The team took many penalties and had too many turnovers, according to Key.
“We are not even close from a standpoint of mental toughness, grit, and the fortitude that you have to have to play this game,” Brent Key said. “We had a lot of young kids on the field, but that isn’t an excuse. We’ve got a lot of damn work to do.”
A positive from the scrimmage is that the team walked away healthy. Key also praised the running backs and press protection, saying they did better than they had earlier in camp.
