The appetizer to a head coach getting coated with mayonnaise is a football game between the Virginia Tech Hokies and Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Between injuries, transfer portal entrants, and NFL Draft declarations, there will be several Minnesota and Virginia Tech players not playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

- Craig McDonald, S, Minnesota (transfer portal)
The list of Minnesota players not playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl is dominated by missing offensive line players. Starting left tackle Ersery is a highly regarded 2025 NFL Draft prospect with nothing left to prove on the college stage. Left guard Cooper had season-ending surgery, and starting right tackle Daniels is headed to the Ohio State Buckeyes via the transfer portal.
The transfer portal will also deprive the Golden Gophers of a good chunk of a running back room that hasn’t really contributed much behind starter Darius Taylor who will feature on Friday night. Nubin had just 11 carries for 19 yards in 2024, while Bangura returns to the Ohio Bobcats with just three appearances for Minnesota.

Rather than asking which Virginia Tech players aren’t playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, it might be easier to ask which players are. The Hokies could be without as many as 14 starters from the 2024 season, and there are at least 25 players in the transfer portal. Virginia Tech hasn’t released a depth chart for this game, so the status of each of the portal entrants isn’t clear.

What is clear is that quarterback Pop Watson will get the start in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, with the expectation that starter Drones won’t play after battling injury this year. While running back Bhayshul Tuten isn’t on the list of players not playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, there is a chance that the Hokies will be without their star rusher too.
