Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders battled with cancer during the summer and two of his sons didn’t know that. During a routine check up for his blood clots, it was discovered that there was a tumor in Sanders’ bladder.
Therefore, Sanders opted for a radical cystectomy (complete removal of the bladder). Sanders removed his bad bladder through a surgery and replaced it with a reconstruction using his intestine. While all this was happening, Sanders chose to keep it a secret not only from the world but also his two NFL sons.
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Sanders revealed why he chose to not tell Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders about the cancer.
“Well, my boys are trying to make a football team, National Football League,” Sanders said (2:09). And my daughters, they love their daddy to life. And, you know, I’m the hero. So seeing the hero shaken or or or damaged — that that’s not pleasant for them. So I wanted to make sure I kept it tight. I thank God for my team around me.”
Both Shedeur and Shilo are trying to kick off their careers in the NFL. Shedeur was picked by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round and is currently on the active roster as the third string quarterback behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel and former Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco. Meanwhile, Shilo was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They released him ahead of the 53-man roster deadline after he slapped Bills tight end on the face in the last preseason game.
Only Coach Prime’s first son Deion Sanders Jr. knew everything from the beginning. Later, daughters Deiondra Sanders and Shelomi Sanders were told when they visited Deion at his Texas ranch.

Deion Sanders’ Latest Health Update
After Colorado’s 35-21 loss against TCU, Sanders was reportedly experiencing serious pain in his left leg. In the postgame interview, he feared that blood clots might have returned. He said that during the game he had to remove his left shoe and sit on a stool to relieve discomfort.
“I’m not getting blood to my leg … That’s why my leg is throbbing,” he said. “I think I’ve got more blood clots.”
Sanders has scheduled an appointment to check up if there’s anything serious brewing inside his body.
