Billy Napier became the head coach of the Florida Gators in December 2021. He was known for carefully building strong football programs, especially during his successful time at Louisiana. When he was hired, many Florida fans were hopeful that he could return the team to being one of the best in the SEC and the country. But after three seasons, the results haven’t met those high hopes.
The team has a 15-18 record overall and is 8-13 in SEC games. Florida has had two losing seasons in a row, which hasn’t happened since the 1970s. They’ve also lost big games at home to teams like Miami and Texas A&M and have a poor 2-11 record against their main rivals.
Many fans are upset because they don’t see enough progress. Napier’s careful, slow-building style hasn’t yet led to the wins or championship path that fans expect from a program with Florida’s strong football history.

Florida HC Billy Napier Faces Intense Scrutiny
Cousin Shane shared his doubts about Florida’s direction under Napier on the SEC Football Podcast. “I think there’s a real shot they don’t make a bowl game,” he said, emphasizing that it would take more than one offseason to convince him Napier is the right fit. He compared Florida’s struggles to a video of a kid stuck in the sand with a four-wheel Jeep, unable to engage four-wheel drive.
“I feel like that’s where we’re at—we’re just stuck,” he added. While Shane clarified that he believes Florida can still reach a bowl, he also said, “I just think that it’s more likely they don’t win 10 games with that schedule.” The comments reflect growing frustration with Napier’s lack of progress and the sense that the program is spinning its wheels.
