North Carolina Tar Heels’ Bill Belichick is currently in the middle of his rookie season as head coach in college football. While it has been a controversial one for different reasons, his college football career might come to an end sooner rather than later.
On Monday, Emmy award-winning journalist Josina Anderson shared a fascinating update regarding NFL interest in Belichick. Anderson was told by a league source that “‘at least two NFL teams” are still* expected to have interest in talking to Bill Belichick.” She added:
“‘A third team could also enter the mix,’ with desires to talk, particularly if one specific personnel change is made under ownership, the source added.”
Anderson also mentioned the reason why Belichick was not able to secure NFL job a couple of seasons ago after parting ways with the New England Patriots in January 2024. She said that the head coach’s own desires and preferences regarding workplace dynamics proved to be too much. She also reported that even today a lot of NFL owners has utmost respect for the six-time Super Bowl winning head coach.
NEW: I’m told “at least two NFL teams” are still* expected to have interest in talking to Bill Belichick, behind-the-scenes* at the very least, about head coach jobs this Carousel season, per a league source.

If the above report of Josina Anderson turns out to be true, it’s hard to believe why Belichick wouldn’t want to return to the NFL. However, before even considering a move, Belichick will have to ponder his current job at Chapel Hill and the consequences of the buyout clause.

Bill Belichick’s UNC Contract And Buyout
Last year in December, Bill Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million contract to become North Carolina’s football head coach. Notably, only the first three years of his contract are guaranteed.
As per the buyout clause, if Belichick leaves on or after June 1, 2025, the buyout drops to just $1 million. However, he must pay that buyout within 180 days of termination.
With reported NFL interest and UNC not doing too well on the field, Belichick might contemplate returning to the NFL, considering a good offer is on the table.
