North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick appears to be interested in current Louisville Cardinals wide receivers coach Garrick McGee. CBS college football reporter Matt Zenitz broke the news earlier Friday, outlining how the Tar Heels reportedly want McGee to become their newest wide receivers coach under Belichick.
Belichick became the head coach at UNC in late 2024 after spending one football season in a commentary role with various companies. He is one of the winningest head coaches in NFL history, with six Super Bowl championships to his name. However, he has never coached at the college level, making the UNC role an adjustment for Belichick.
What Did Matt Zenitz Report About Bill Belichick’s UNC?

“North Carolina is targeting Louisville’s Garrick McGee for its wide receivers coach job, sources tell @CBSSports/@247Sports. McGee, a former head coach at UAB, has worked at Louisville under Jeff Brohm the last two years after previously working under him at Purdue,” he detailed on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

McGee has spent various lengths of time with numerous different college and NFL teams since his coaching career began in 1996.
Bill Belichick’s UNC Overhaul
Belichick has been quick to implement his vision for the Tar Heels football program since arriving. He has been active in completing his offensive, defensive, and special teams staffs as soon as possible to ensure his new team is well-equipped for the transfer portal and preseason preparations.
Though he is one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, college football is another beast and differs greatly from the professional ranks. As a result, Belichick will need to be active and sharp in recruiting and the transfer portal to ensure UNC can compete with some of college football’s biggest programs, including Texas, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Clemson next year.

With the obvious goal being a national championship, Belichick will need to make an instant impact and set a new standard of performance and expectations for the program.
This year, the Tar Heels finished with a 6-7 regular-season record and were 3-5 against ACC opponents.
