Bill Belichick Downplays Spring Progress Despite UNC’s Big Rebuild Hopes

Bill Belichick, the legendary NFL coach, is leading the University of North Carolina football team’s rebuild after a disappointing 2024 season. As spring practices begin, he urges patience, stressing the importance of player commitment and steady growth. Unlike in the NFL, where offseason contact is restricted, Belichick is taking advantage of UNC’s more physical practices to accelerate player development.

“No big expectations here in spring besides getting better every day,” Belichick said.

With only two practices completed, featuring players in shorts and nameless jerseys, Belichick has not made sweeping evaluations of the team. However, he remains firm that the Tar Heels will be built to his standards.

“I don’t really have any expectations,” Belichick said. “It’s going to be up to each individual. I know we’ve got a good plan; I know we can do the right things to put a good product on the field. Everybody that buys into it and wants to be a part of it will be a part of it. And if they don’t, they can go somewhere else. That’s their decision.”

Belichick has seen progress since his arrival but admits the early practices offer limited insights. Unlike his time in the NFL, where offseason contact was heavily restricted, the 72-year-old coach plans to use the spring to develop players through physicality, particularly in the run game and along the trenches.

“Contact is very limited in the NFL in the spring. There really isn’t any,” Belichick said.

Quarterbacks, however, will see minimal contact due to a thin depth chart. Purdue transfer Ryan Browne and freshman Bryce Baker are available, while Max Johnson, last year’s opening-day starter, continues recovering from a broken leg. Belichick said Johnson’s workload is being monitored daily.

The early days of camp have been about laying the foundation.

“It’s kind of similar to what a rookie minicamp would be and time with the rookies,” Belichick said. “… We’re starting to put everything together — here’s how we do things, here’s what our expectations are, this is what you need to do to be successful. They’ve embraced that and tried to do it. We haven’t accomplished anything, but we’re a lot further along than we were five weeks ago. We’re getting there.”

Still, Belichick is enjoying the hands-on coaching.
