The Michigan Wolverines are making waves with a major addition to the coaching staff. Less than two weeks after the rival Ohio State Buckeyes won the national championship, the Wolverines rehired Biff Poggi, one of Jim Harbaugh’s longtime right-hand men.
His return hints at Michigan’s strive to re-manufacture the winning magic, even as the program transitions to new leadership under head coach Sherrone Moore.
Familiar Face, Biff Poggi, Returns to Ann Arbor
The NCAA coaching carousel is in full swing, and the Michigan Wolverines have brought back a crucial figure from their past. Biff Poggi, most recently the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers, has officially rejoined the ‘UM’ as an associate head coach.

Poggi first joined Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2016 as an analyst before returning in 2021 as an associate head coach. He played a vital role in shaping Michigan’s tough, physical playing style, helping the team rise to national-title-level play.
His influence extended beyond strategy—he was widely regarded as Harbaugh’s right-hand man, maintaining discipline and intensity within the program.
This success at Michigan led him to a head coaching opportunity at Charlotte in the American Athletic Conference of the Group of Five. However, after a disappointing 6-16 record over two seasons, he was fired in November of last season.
Now, he’s back in Ann Arbor, this time under Moore, as Michigan looks to recapture its dominance from a couple of seasons ago.
Michigan’s Attempt at Reinforcing Its Winning Identity
Michigan’s resurgence in 2021 wasn’t just about talent—it was also about a cultural shift. After a disappointing 2020 season, leaders like EDGE Aidan Hutchinson and QB Cade McNamara committed to changing the program’s mentality.
At the same time, Poggi’s arrival gave Harbaugh a trusted advisor, allowing him to focus on the big picture while fostering a player-led culture.

Poggi’s impact was undeniable, and his return could have similar benefits. Moore, who is entering his second year as the head coach, will now have an experienced mentor by his side.
His presence should help Michigan navigate high-pressure moments and maintain the strong locker-room chemistry that has defined the team’s recent success.
With Poggi back in the fold, Michigan isn’t just holding onto the past—it’s reinforcing the foundation that made it a champion.
