Days After $7.5M Target Slips Away, Biff Poggi Reveals Interviewing For Michigan Head Coaching Position

It’s been nearly two weeks since Michigan fired Sherrone Moore from the head coach position. Since then, Biff Poggi has been the interim head coach of the program. Several names have been rumored to be the next head coach in Michigan.

The most recent, and probably the biggest, rumor circulating was about Kenny Dillingham. The Arizona State Sun Devils’ head coach was reportedly in contact with Michigan regarding the job opening.

All the rumors were put to rest on Saturday. As per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Dillingham signed a new deal worth $7.5 million average with Arizona. With Dillingham out of the picture, Michigan is still looking for its next head coach, and Poggi believes it should be him.

As per On3’s Clayton Sayfie, Poggi has interviewed for the job “multiple times.” More importantly, Poggi is confident that he can lead the Wolverines if he is trusted with the job.

“I know what the hell I’m doing,” Poggi said.

The confidence isn’t misplaced because Poggi has head coaching experience, though it was short-lived and wasn’t with a high-profile program like the Wolverines. In addition to that, he has previously worked with the Wolverines.

He first joined Michigan in 2016 as an analyst. Then, in 2021, he became the associate head coach for a while. In September this year, when Moore was serving a suspension, Poggi led the team to wins against Central Michigan and Nebraska.

Despite Poggi’s confidence, it’s a huge gamble. Whether Michigan will move forward with him will depend on the kind of replacements they can find. If other coaches keep falling out like Dillingham, Michigan might roll the dice with the 65-year-old.

Biff Poggi On the “Unique and Complex” Situation in Michigan

There might not be another team that can understand what the Wolverines are going through. Their head coach was fired after an internal investigation concluded he had violated policy through an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

But the problems started way before he was fired. After being fired, Moore was arrested and charged with home invasion and stalking, including allegations that he “had a long history of domestic violence” against the alleged victim.

This can damage the morale of any team. Poggi said that the situation in Michigan is “unique and complex,” and it isn’t something one could prepare for.

“I don’t know that you can prepare for something like this. I’ll just say, complicated,” he said.

He said that the students and people associated with the team have felt betrayed. But they’re now trying to bounce back from that.
