Best Friends Baker Mayfield, Mark Andrews Collide on Monday Night Football, Conjuring Up Memories of That Special 2017 Season

Best friends off the field, Baker Mayfield and Mark Andrews on-field success has been well documented, including that special 2017 season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Ravens collide for a much-anticipated game on Monday Night Football, but in all reality, the fireworks expected on MNF won’t come close to the show this duo put on back in Norman.

The former teammates with the Oklahoma Sooners playing against one another on MNF brings fond memories of the dynamic duo that was with the Oklahoma Sooners.

Baker Mayfield, Mark Andrews Starred as Oklahoma Teammates

Mayfield’s collegiate career is as decorated as they come. The former No. 1 overall pick won the Heisman Trophy following arguably one of the most dominant seasons from a quarterback in recent history (at the time).

Mayfield, a transfer from Texas Tech, had equally dominant years the two years prior at OU, but starred most when he targeted his good pal, roommate, and comedic genius himself Andrews, specifically.

In that historic 2017 season, the good friends and roommates simply went off.

Mayfield threw for 4,634 yards and 43 touchdowns, while Andrews caught 62 receptions for 959 yards and eight touchdowns, all career-highs.

Oh, and Andrews did this with CeeDee Lamb and Hollywood Brown as Mayfield’s targets on the outside.

When their college careers were said and done, Mayfield and Andrews combined for such ridiculous statistical outputs that even your video game numbers envy.

    Mayfield and Andrews connected for:

    • 112 receptions
    • 1,766 yards
    • 22 touchdowns

For a tight end-quarterback combination, that is just absurd, considering they had just 12-game regular seasons to work within. In fact, Andrews’ 22 touchdowns finished sixth in Oklahoma school history and his receiving yard total still stands as the most for a tight end in OU history.

Andrews won the John Mackey Award in 2017, while Mayfield’s awards are almost too plentiful to list.

You don’t generate such impressive on-field displays without chemistry, and Mayfield and Andrews had plenty of that on and off the field. The self-described best friends take playful jabs at each other to this day, especially in the lead-up to their in-season matchups.

Andrews has stated he doesn’t talk to Mayfield at all during the season, and Mayfield, as entertaining as always, doesn’t understand.

“Even though Mark and I are best friends, him and I don’t talk in-season. He’s a weirdo. He can’t exactly separate friendship and football,” Mayfield said.

“He struggles with that on a year-to-year basis. There’s a few months at a time when we’re friends again, but for right now, no. It hurts. It hurts my feelings. Guy was in my wedding, won’t talk to me.”

Surprisingly, Andrews jabbed back at his former teammate with a “that’s just Bake being Bake” remark that perfectly sums up their friendship.

With their relationship on full display during their time on Monday Night Football as members of the Ravens and Bucs, it’s also fair to relive those glory days back in Norman.

And it’s pretty easy to rest assured that there likely won’t be another duo like Mayfield and Andrews any time soon.
