The New York Yankees have made two offers to Cody Bellinger, but that’s the last we have heard, which suggests their negotiations have hit a wall. In the meantime, the Yankees are reportedly also in talks with free agent shortstop Bo Bichette.
On Thursday, MLB insider Jon Heyman shared updates on the Yankees’ free agent interests. The insider said the Yankees are taking a closer look at Bichette.
“Right now, the Yankees are taking a little bit of a closer look at star free-agent infielder Beau Bichette, one of the top free agents on the market,” Heyman said.
Heyman added that there’s a contract gap between the Yankees and Bellinger. Heyman also mentioned the teams that are interested in the former NL MVP’s services, including places where he once played, like the LA Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.
“Right now, there is still a bit of a gap, and they haven’t been able to close it to this point,” Heyman said. “Does that mean that Bellinger is gone? Not necessarily, but both Bellinger and the Yankees will have an opportunity to look around a bit.
“We know that Bellinger is drawing interest from teams he’s played for. They like him. The Dodgers and Cubs are two teams looking at Bellinger. Mets, Giants, potentially the Jays if they don’t get a deal done with Kyle Tucker, that could be another team for Bellinger.”
Jon Heyman Explores Bo Bichette’s Fit With Yankees
Bo Bichette had a great year in 2025 with injuries forcing him to miss some games. But he returned for the World Series and made his presence felt. Bichette has played shortstop all his career but this season he has been open to even take the mantle to play at second base if required.
In his show, Jon Heyman explored an option where Bichette can be useful to the Yankees if a deal takes place.
“It would be very, very interesting to see how they fit him in, because we know that Volpe is out at the beginning of the year after shoulder surgery,” Heyman said. “So, obviously, it could be shortstop at the beginning for the Yankees. He could also do some work at first base with Ben Rice there, a left-hander, a real hard-hitting platoon potentially. But it’s not the obvious fit, at least for 2026.
“They are taking bids on Jazz Chisholm, the All-Star second baseman. Not sure anything is developing there, but if they do trade Chisholm, obviously, then second base would be open and more obvious.”
Apart from the Yankees, Bichette has also drawn interest from the Phillies, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, and his old Blue Jays team.
