Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers are entering uncharted territory. The pitcher is a back-to-back Cy Young winner, and he is commanding a salary in arbitration never seen before.
Heading into the final year of his contract, Skubal has reportedly requested a salary of $32 million. Meanwhile, the Tigers have submitted a $19 million salary. There’s a $13 million gap. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the highest one-year salary ever negotiated for an arbitration-eligible pitcher was $19.75 million, earned by David Price with the Detroit Tigers in 2015.
Upon learning this development, fans suggested that the Tigers let go of the pitcher.
“Trade him already,” one fan suggested.
“Are they just trying to piss him off?” one fan asked.
“So is it now likely that Skubal is getting moved Jon?” another asked.
“This is the problem with the current state of baseball. He is the best pitcher in the sport dude. PAY THE MAN,” one fan added.
“Just get rid of him already tigers clearly don’t have the money. It’s right in front of his face now,” one fan wrote.
“Tigers could get an absolute Haul from Boston but wont be realistic,” one fan predicted.
Tarik Skubal Might Get Traded By Tigers Before Deadline
The Tigers clearly don’t have the money or resources to keep Tarik Skubal beyond the 2026 season. The southpaw is represented by Scott Boras, who is known to be among the best out there.
If the Tigers are unable to sign him to an extension, it’s not worth keeping him beyond the trade deadline and then losing him for nothing. As such, it is predicted that the Tigers might consider moving him before the deadline.
When that happens, there’ll be several suitors for the pitchers, especially big-market teams, who are waiting for that to happen. The Mets need a starting arm, the Dodgers are never full of them and the Phillies could also use some additions. It remains to be seen how Detroit best uses Skubal’s presence.
