After joining the Philadelphia Phillies in February 2019, J.T. Realmuto established himself as an ever-present behind home plate. During his time at Citizens Bank Park, Realmuto earned himself two All-Star selections, two Gold Gloves, and two Silver Slugger awards, while also being named in the All-MLB First Team twice.
The catcher played a key role in helping his team win the NL East for the second consecutive year in 2025.
Now a free agent, the Phillies are naturally keen on re-signing Realmuto, with president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski describing the veteran backstop’s position as the team’s “main focus” this offseason. However, negotiations appear to be moving rather slowly.
On Wednesday’s episode of “The Phillies Show,” insider Jim Salisbury of PHLY Sports had his say on Realmuto’s situation, proposing what he thinks could be the perfect resolution to get the deal over the line.
“I don’t think they (Phillies) would let a three-year deal stop them (from re-signing J.T Realmuto),” Salisbury said (Timestamp: 15:54). “Now, I don’t think it would be three times 20. I could see a three-year deal being the resolution here.”
Insider Lists Potential Alternatives The Phillies Could Consider If J.T. Realmuto Moves On
J.T. Realmuto continuing his stint with the Philadelphia Phillies is a move that appears to make plenty of sense for both player and club.
However, the fact that it is taking so long for both parties to arrive at a conclusion means there is definitely a possibility that Realmuto may decide to move on.
In case that happens, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter listed a few options that he thinks the Phillies could consider as replacements.
“Re-signing J.T. Realmuto looked like a no-brainer for the Phillies when the offseason began, but the longer things stretch on without a deal getting done, the more likely it is he winds up elsewhere,” Reuter wrote. “That would leave Victor Caratini, Jonah Heim and whatever they can scrape up on the trade market as the top options to replace him behind the plate.”
Jonah Heim is coming off a successful stint with the Texas Rangers, where he won the 2023 World Series, while also earning himself All-Star honors and a Gold Glove award. On the other hand, Victor Caratini spent the last two seasons on the Houston Astros’ books.
