Considered by many to be the No. 1 free agent of the offseason, Kyle Tucker’s future remains undecided, with spring training less than two months away. Although several teams have been keeping tabs on the outfielder, no one has succeeded in getting a deal over the line.
According to reports, Tucker’s contractual demands are proving to be a significant sticking point in negotiations. Sources have claimed the slugger has his heart set on a long-term deal in the range of $400 million.
The LA Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Mets are reportedly the three teams pursuing Kyle Tucker’s acquisition most aggressively. All three teams, however, are rumored to be more inclined towards signing the four-time All-Star on a short-term, high-AAV contract.
According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the proposition of playing alongside Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor may give the Mets a significant advantage in their bid to convince Tucker to move to Queens.
Sammon explained his thoughts on Thursday’s episode of the “Mets’d Up Podcast.”
“Probably the Mets’ play (To sign kyle Tucker), is the three-year type of deal,” Sammon said (Timestamp: 12:53). “High annual average value, and the pitch of like, ‘Hey, you join Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor.’ All of a sudden, the Mets are a serious World Series contender. Big time, I would argue. You think that they’re going to add pitching as well.”
After A Disappointing Offseason, Signing Kyle Tucker Would Be A Step In The Right Direction For The Mets
Although 2025 started on a promising note, the end of the season could not have been worse for the Mets. After giving up what was once a commanding lead atop the NL East, the team shockingly failed to make the playoffs on the final day of the season.
Hoping to see their team bounce back in 2026, fans expected a big offseason. However, things have not gone to plan so far. Important players like Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz, and Brandon Nimmo have parted ways with the club, while adequate replacements have not yet been made.
Although the presence of superstars Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor in the lineup makes the Mets a formidable team, they will need to add much more quality to have any hopes of competing with the best of the best come the business end of the season.
Hence, signing a player of Kyle Tucker’s quality will be a step in the right direction for the team, and fans will definitely feel much more confident heading into the season if such an addition is made to the roster.
