Cubs Insider Breaks Down Realistic Odds Of Cody Bellinger Returning To Chicago

Cody Bellinger, one of the off-season’s top free agents, remains unsigned, with less than two months to go before spring training begins. Although several teams have expressed interest in signing the outfielder, no one has yet succeeded in getting a deal over the line.

According to reports, the Chicago Cubs are also one of the teams keeping a close eye on Bellinger. The slugger has spent two seasons with the Cubs in the past.

On Friday’s episode of “North Side Territory,” The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma offered his opinion on Cody Bellinger’s fit with the Cubs and the likelihood of a reunion of the two parties.

“Some of the mental part of it doesn’t line up for me,” Sharma said (Timestamp: 18:37). “They suddenly now are willing to pay him like a much bigger deal, a long-term deal, when they didn’t want to do it last year and they salary dumped him essentially. Does his skillset work for Wrigley? He doesn’t hit the ball super hard.”

“He fits perfectly for Yankee Stadium or ballparks where the wind isn’t going to crush the ball for a left-handed pull hitter. The fit for me doesn’t work as well as these other guys. Come on, he’s going to want a long-term deal, he’s going to want a big chunk of change here. It’s not adding up for me,” he added.

Despite Plenty Of Interest From Other Teams, Cody Bellinger Looks Likely To Seal A Return To The New York Yankees

Having joined the New York Yankees via a trade ahead of the 2025 campaign, Cody Bellinger quickly established himself as a fan favorite in the Bronx. The outfielder ended the regular season with a .272 batting average, 29 home runs, and 98 RBIs, playing a vital role in helping his team qualify for the playoffs.

Soon after he opted out of the remainder of his contract, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he would “love” to have Bellinger back at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees could also do well with reinforcement in their outfield, and hence, the Bronx Bombers remain favorites to secure the two-time All-Star’s services.

According to projections, Cody Bellinger is set to secure a contract in the range of $160 million.
