Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold found himself on the sidelines during the Tigers’ Week 9 clash against Arkansas. The QB, once viewed as the centerpiece of Hugh Freeze’s offense, was benched midway through the first half after a costly pick-six that shifted the game’s momentum.
Arnold started the game with some rhythm but struggled to sustain drives. The interception, returned for a touchdown by the Razorbacks’ defense, proved to be the final straw. Freeze turned to Ashton Daniels, the Stanford transfer who had been splitting practice reps with Arnold in recent weeks.
When the benching news hit social media, it quickly caught fire. On3’s Instagram post announcing the change drew hundreds of reactions from fans. Many pointed to Arnold’s hefty NIL valuation, reportedly around $2.4 million.

“My +7.5 is cookedMy +7.5 is cooked,” a fan wrote.
“Jackson Arnold will be wearing Kentucky blue next year,” a fan wrote.
“Hugh freeze for sure getting fired,” a fan wrote.
“I remember in preseason an Auburn fan page was trying to tell OU fans that Jackson Arnold was the truth… we knew this already,” a fan wrote.
“They need to Bench the Coach,” a fan wrote.

The move wasn’t entirely unexpected. Auburn’s offense had been inconsistent all season, and pressure had been mounting on Freeze to shake things up. The decision could mark a turning point for Auburn’s season and for Arnold’s future at the program.
Daniels now gets his chance to lead the offense, while Arnold faces the challenge of regaining trust and proving he can deliver under pressure.

Freeze Signalled Possible QB Shake-Up Before Arkansas Clash
Freeze had already hinted earlier in the week that Auburn might be heading toward a quarterback change. Reflecting on the team’s uneven performances, Freeze said that it was time to take a closer look at everything happening on offense.
Despite Jackson Arnold’s efforts and flashes of potential, the Tigers had failed to produce consistent results, and the coaching staff wanted to understand why the team’s talent wasn’t translating into wins.
Freeze explained that the staff was evaluating all aspects of the offense, from play-calling to execution, with quarterback play being a key focus.
“We’re going to get (Jackson) and Ashton a lot of reps, and kind of see where it goes from there,” he said.
The coach’s comments suggested a growing sense of urgency within the program. Auburn’s offense had shown promise in moments but continued to stall when it mattered most.
