Colorado’s strong 31-7 win over Delaware on Saturday yielded plenty of positives for Coach Deion Sanders’ program. Backup quarterback Ryan Staub stepped up to throw a pair of touchdown passes, the offense seemed to be clicking better than usual. Nevertheless, former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel was less than impressed by Pat Shurmur’s play from the previous day.
On the “Say What Needs to be Said” show, Asante had a lot to say about Colorado’s bubble screen game. Not suggesting that the Buffaloes failed, he was more concerned about their tactics.
“But I have one problem about this game. One problem, right? Colorado kept running the same play and it was killing me. Those old school, those old school bubble screens, man, are killing me, man,” said Samuel.
“And totally outdated. Coach Pat Shurmur, please update your bubble screen series, man. A cornerback with instincts and ball skills would take one of those screens to the house,” he further elaboarted.
The former defensive standout stated that the bubble screen concepts that Colorado employed looked just the same as the film study that their opponents would watch weeks often. It is extremely predictable behavior that puts the Buffaloes in the potentially dangerous situation.

“The first pass player of the game for Colorado was damn near intercepted because the cornerback knew exactly what was coming from film study. They’ve been running these same plays since the first game of the season. That cornerback just didn’t have the skills to make the play”, noted Samuel.
Moreover, Asante indicated a particular play from the Delaware game to further emphasize the point. In Colorado’s very first pass play, the cornerback almost intercepted a pass based on what he had studied on film.

Shurmur’s Track Record of Developing Elite Talent At Colorado
Pat Shurmur’s history at Colorado demonstrates his offensive expertise and capacity to develop great talent. He joined Deion Sanders’ staff in July 2023 and was named the sole offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after just six weeks in being promoted from co-offensive coordinator.
When Shurmur installed the system this offseason, it certainly produced results. Shedeur Sanders finished top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting while Travis Hunter grabbed a Biletnikoff Award and the National Player of the Year award.
Samuel’s comments are especially relevant now as the Buffs are preparing for Big 12 Conference play. Although Colorado dominated Delaware, especially with Ryan Staub’s big performance, the competition will be significantly stronger in conference.
