According to TMZ and official reports from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Saturday evening following a post-Stagecoach party. Elway was reportedly driving the golf cart with Sperbeck seated in the back. Tragically, Sperbeck fell off the cart, striking his head on the asphalt, resulting in a traumatic brain injury.

Sperbeck was rushed to a nearby Palm Springs hospital, where he was placed on life support.
Despite doctors’ efforts, his injuries were too severe. He remained in critical condition until Wednesday morning, when he was pronounced dead. His family worked with medical staff to arrange organ donation, allowing Sperbeck to make one final, selfless contribution.
Sperbeck had deep ties to the football world, best known as Elway’s longtime agent and later his business partner. He helped guide Elway’s off-field ventures and remained one of the quarterback’s closest confidants throughout his playing and executive career. Their relationship, which began in Elway’s early NFL days, evolved into a professional partnership built on trust, loyalty, and shared success.
Elway, a Stanford alum and two-time Super Bowl champion, retired from playing in 1999 but went on to serve in several executive roles for the Denver Broncos, most recently acting as a consultant until his contract ended in March 2023.
