HISTORIC: Andrew Luck’s Firing of Troy Taylor Shows Seismic Shift in College Athletics

Since taking over as the General Manager of the Cardinals football team, Andrew Luck wasted little time calling for a program reset. In the program reset, Luck fired Troy Taylor with the hopes of resetting the program.

In his past two years at Stanford, Taylor has led the team to zero playoffs and has had a less-than-ideal record of only six wins and 18 losses.

Despite how uncommon it is for a football coach to be fired in March, it’s also uncommon to see a coach fired by the General Manager and not the athletic director. Perhaps more importantly than his losing record, Taylor was fired not just for being a lousy coach but also a bad human being.

Andrew Luck’s Firing of Troy Taylor Points to a New Age in College Athletics

This decision came from former Stanford quarterback and program legend in Luck. He now serves as the General Manager for the football team. He has the ability to make these moves, despite how rarely it is when a General Manager fires a football coach and now the Athletic Director.

The move came after a report hit ESPN last week speaking about how Taylor treated his female staffers and allegations detailing his behavior towards them.

“Stanford head football coach Troy Taylor bullied and belittled female athletic staffers, sought to have an NCAA compliance officer removed after she warned him of rules violations and repeatedly made ‘inappropriate’ comments to another woman about her appearance,” ESPN reported.

Luck quickly took to the media to explain this move and addressed his need to change the culture and have a program reset for the once prestigious college football team.

“It has been clear that certain aspects of the program need change. Additionally, in recent days, there has been significant attention to Stanford investigations in previous years related to Coach Taylor,” Luck said.

“After continued consideration, it is evident to me that our program needs a reset. In consultation with university leadership, I no longer believe that Coach Taylor is the right coach to lead our football program,” Luck continued.

For a long time in athletics, females have been given the short end of the stick. It’s a tale as old as time. It’s refreshing to see something getting done about it with a coach who has been proven to treat his counterparts very poorly. Even if it means another losing season, Luck has made the right choice.

Despite Luck’s difficult road ahead of needing to find a new head coach in the spring, it’s safe to say he made the right choice. Luck has shown that he cares about the program and wants to see it succeed. The next hire could define the program’s future and help put Stanford back on the right path.
