Florida QB DJ Lagway stands to become one of college football’s top stars in 2025. His loyalty to Gainesville and the Gators has proven invaluable for Florida coach Billy Napier. The proof can be seen in how the Gators’ recruiting has taken off since the fall.

DJ Lagway’s Impact on Florida’s Future
In a recent post uploaded to X by ESPN College Football, ESPN college football analyst Tom Luginbill shared his insights on DJ Lagway’s potential impact to Florida’s future.
“I think the biggest ‘X’ factor in all of that for…Florida was the allegiance of DJ Lagway to this program no matter how bad things got, no matter who was tampering with him,” he explained.
“Let’s not forget, he had been committed to Florida for, what, well over a year? And every shark in the water was trying to steal him, but he maintained that allegiance and that loyalty, and I think that sends a message to everybody else,” he continued.
“So, now, all of a sudden, you start winning, you start playing good, and the perception changes of your program. It took, what, three weeks? Four weeks? And everything changed for Florida’s program,” Luginbill concluded.
Based on a graphic that accompanied Luginbill’s remarks, the Gators’ 2025 recruiting class was ranked 35th in the nation at the end of October. A month later, their ranking improved to 27th. By Dec. 4, the class had taken the 10th spot.
Lagway, a consensus freshman All-American quarterback, elevated the Gators last season. He led Florida to a 6-0 record in games he started and finished.
Even though he left the game early against the Georgia Bulldogs due to an injury, he still managed to pass for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns throughout the season.
He ranked second with 10 yards per attempt (10) and 11.8 average target depth (11.8) among SEC starters, trailing only Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss. Among returning SEC starters in 2025, Lagway’s big-time throw percentage of 8.8% stands out—nearly 3% higher than the next closest player, Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, at 5.9%.
