The transfer portal has become a huge topic of conversation in recent years. With the introduction of NIL in college sports, football players are more prone to leave their schools in the portal to sign a bigger contract with a different program. This has led to the NCAA looking at solutions to the player movement issue.
On Friday, analyst Adam Breneman broke down why it could be challenging to find a solution in an Instagram reel. Notably, he spoke about the differences in what the Power 4 and Group of 5 conferences want.
“The biggest issue in college football right now is not the playoff format. It’s the transfer portal and Kirby Smart is at the forefront of it. The current system creates a lot of chaos to say the least but nothing can change until the politics of it get sorted out. So, what’s the holdup?
“So, currently Power 4 conferences are pushing for 65% majority power to change the transfer portal rules. The problem is G5 conferences benefit from two windows because they get Power 4 bounce back players. So, the Group of Five conferences want those two portal windows to stay, but all those Power 4 conferences want to go to one portal window.”

Breneman went on to explain that Georgia head coach Kirby Smart thinks the December window is a mess, but thinks it would be even worse if the only window were in April. The reason for this is that he thinks tampering would become even more prevalent because of the ability to view players during spring practice.
FBS Coaches Voted in Support of Moving to One Transfer Portal Window
Earlier this year, the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) coaches voted and showed unanimous support for a proposal that would reduce college football’s transfer windows down to a single 10-day period in January. The goal of this is to preserve the integrity of the bowl season, ensuring fewer players sit out.
While player movement has become an issue in college football, one of the biggest problems it has caused is with bowl season. Since the transfer portal opens in December, at the same time as the bowl games, many players would sit out unless their team qualified for the college football playoff. They did this to avoid injuries before a possible transfer.
