Analyst Josh Pate Warns of ‘Gross Misreading of the Room’ as College Football Pay-Per-View Theory Gains Steam

College football is one of the more easily accessible sports for fans all over the country each year, as games are shown on networks such as ESPN, Fox Sports, and CBS.

However, could there be interest in certain networks broadcasting games on a pay-per-view basis?

Josh Pate Reacts To Former ESPN Executive’s Take on College Football Possibly Becoming Pay-Per-View

CBS Sports analyst Josh Pate recently chatted about former ESPN President John Skipper’s speculative take on certain college football games being shown on a possible pay-per-view basis in the future.

Here is what Pate had to say:

“(Skipper) was saying, ‘you know, it could be in the future, that for the biggest college football games during the season, you don’t just turn on the channel and get ’em. You gotta pay $4.99, five dollars, six dollars, seven dollars, to watch Georgia vs Alabama.’ It’s imperative to have the right people in the room…You have to have strong leadership.”

Pate also made it a point to mention that if it were just up to the television executives, networks like ESPN would already be down the pay-per-view route.

But on the college football side, there have to be people who can disagree with this. While pay-per-view might work for boxing, it might not flourish with a sport such as college football.

Could College Football Networks Adopt the Pay-Per-View Model?

At this point, it is hard to say, seeing as college football is one of the most popular sports in the world, the way things are rolling right now.

Each Fall and early Winter, the sport is shown on networks such as ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, CBS, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, Fox Sports 1, etc.

It can also be streamed on apps such as ESPN+ and the Fox Sports app, for which fans pay a monthly fee.

However, the idea of having to grab your remote each time a massive game is on and pay five dollars for it simply doesn’t seem fair to the average fan and customer.

While networks might be moving in a certain direction that dictates a possible pay-per-view model, that juncture is not here yet.

Also, this sport deserves to be broadcast to all fans in the best way possible, as each fan should be able to have access to each game without having to pay more than what they are already paying for regular television, because the sport and its fans deserve a lot better.
