DJ Lagway made headlines earlier this month when he announced that he’d enter the transfer portal after just two years with the Florida Gators. The transfer portal will officially open on January 2nd and remain open until January 16th.
A lot of players have already committed to entering the portal, and a lot more are expected to follow in the coming days. Lagway is undeniably the biggest name from the Gators program so far, but he’s not the game-changer for Josh Pate.
On a recent episode of Josh Pate’s College Football Show, the analyst talked about the Florida Gators’ wide receiver, Eugene Wilson III. Pate said that he has his eyes on Wilson III and is interested to see where he will go next.
“He is the number 78-rated player in the portal,” Pate said. “Now, I still have this side of me that believes with a healthy season, this guy can be a 1000-yard receiver. Maybe I’m wrong, but I believe it.”
He played just six games this season and has 239 yards and three touchdowns. Pate still has faith in him because he hasn’t been healthy long enough to showcase his full potential. In 22 total games, he has 1043 yards for Florida. His trajectory will also depend on the program he joins next.
“According to esteemed guest of the program, Pete Nakos, it looks like Texas Tech could be a team to watch here. It’s early obviously, portal is not even open yet, but it opens January 2nd.”
Pate believes that a lot of players will switch programs because a lot of coaches have already switched places. Kyle Whittingham, Lane Kiffin, and more will be monitoring every major move in college football and will try to bring the players who can help their program next year.

DJ Lagway Wanted to Stay in Florida
Lagway, who joined the Gators in 2024, was seen as a long-term quarterback prospect for the program. So, when he announced that he would enter the portal and weigh his options for next season, it raised several eyebrows.
Then Chris Hummer came out with a report on what went down in Florida that led to Lagway’s exit. In his report, Hummer revealed that the quarterback wanted to stay in Florida, but his conversations with head coach Jon Sumrall didn’t go as planned.
“Lagway’s initial meeting with the new Florida staff did not go well, per multiple sources. New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall questioned who Lagway is as a football player. The new staff opted to challenge the high-priced quarterback, pushing him on his competitiveness and work ethic,” Hummer wrote in his report.
LSU, Clemson, Miami, and TCU are believed to be his best choices for now. The next few days will be crucial for Lagway’s future.
