On Monday, May 26, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey pushed for a serious change in the CFP selection committee’s criteria, describing his conference as different from the others and stating that the SEC schedule stands alone.

What Changes Did Sankey Propose Regarding the SEC?
Sankey’s proposition was triggered by the College Football Playoff Committee’s ranking, which did not sit well with him. Sankey believed that the committee’s ranking failed to reflect the SEC’s strength.
This led him to push for the following:
- More SEC representation in the College Football Playoffs. His reason for this is simple: the teams in the SEC have shown consistency in their games.
- Schedule Expansion: He proposes increasing the number of games from eight to nine.
- Strengthening the Schedule: This means that teams in the Southeastern Conference should face tough and competitive opponents.
What is Analyst Ari Wasserman’s take on these Propositions?
On Thursday, May 29, analyst Ari Wasserman tweeted his take on Sankey’s opinions and comments. He stated:
“The CFP Committee has done a magnificent job and outside of an impossible situation — 2023 FSU — I don’t know that I’d change a single thing they did. I also think that most non-biased people would arrive at all of the same conclusions with the data that was available at the time of their decisions.”
What specific decision is he talking about? Enough with the generalities. What did the CFP Committee get wrong specifically and why? https://t.co/v9mB79fktC

In essence, Wasserman praised the CFP Committee and commended their decisions thus far, except for the one involving FSU, which he regarded as a close call and a tough decision.
In referencing FSU, Wasserman was referring to the school’s exclusion from the College Football Playoff in 2023. At the time, FSU did not perform well in the championship games. Although they had a strong regular season, they were excluded from the Playoffs. While it seemed like the committee’s decision was unfair, it was a difficult and complex call.
Wasserman’s tweet shows his strong support for the committee and the decisions they have made. His words also suggest that he does not support Sankey’s perceived attitude of entitlement as SEC Commissioner.
While Sankey believes that teams in the SEC should be treated differently from teams in other conferences, Wasserman believes that all teams—big or small—should be given equal chances.
Wasserman also tweeted two pointed questions to Sankey, giving the commissioner an opportunity to express his specific dissatisfaction with the committee’s rankings openly.
