5-Star Recruit David Sanders Jr. Switching Positions

Sanders Jr. is a five-star recruit who has moved to the right tackle position after playing on the left side in high school.

The 6’6” 280-pound offensive player said in the Volreport, “I’ve never played right tackle in my entire life. Switching my stance was a lot different, but I’m getting used to it.”

Sanders Jr. is part of a group that includes the depth of Lance Heard and Larry Johnson III.

On3’s J.D. PicKell’s recently share some valuable insight on Sanders Jr. and where he is at, saying, “You don’t get that five-star attitude from him, which I think is a tremendous thing and endear yourself to your teammates early on in the process I think he’s probably going to eventually start at right tackle that’s where this whole thing is trending now.”

Sanders Jr. added that he had embraced the role he had been given and didn’t expect to when he faced those two players, who are a big part of the Vols.

Sanders Jr. has already seen the work of Heard and Johnson in practice, noting that “I didn’t think they’d take to me as well as they did, but they called me on the weekends to let me know we’re going to the gym or to get extra work in after practice.

Sanders Jr. is working on adding and regulating his weight and strength and ensuring he is ready for the season.

He also understands how improved play from Heard and Johnson and being effective himself can help the Vols protect Nico Iamaleava, something that J.D. PicKell said the Vols did not do last season.
