Analyst Names One Condition That Can Knock Alabama Out Of College Football Playoff Contention Despite Loss vs Georgia

The College Football Playoff committee has placed the Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2) at No. 9 ahead of the championship week. The Crimson Tide will play the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship game.

Even if Alabama loses the SEC championship game, it is still in line to qualify for the playoffs, thanks to its strong rankings. However, college football analyst Adam Breneman points out one scenario where Alabama still doesn’t qualify for the playoffs.

“If Alabama loses the SEC championship game, they are still going to make the playoffs,” Breneman said in his recent media appearance. “Now we talked about if they lose by three touchdowns, what happens? That’s not gonna happen. Alabama is in the playoffs based on the rankings that we got today. It’s a big win, you gotta have a sigh of relief for Kalen DeBoer.”

Breneman reposted this video along with a caption that read:

“If Alabama loses the SEC Championship, they should still be in the Playoff. The committee all but confirmed it in the rankings. The only hesitation is a blowout loss, and I don’t see it happening.”

Thus, according to Breneman, only a blowout loss could take Alabama out of the College Football Playoff.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Georgia Bulldogs: SEC Championship Game Details

In a matter of a few hours, the Georgia Bulldogs will take the field to defend their SEC championship against the Alabama Crimson Tide, who were the only team who defeat the reigning SEC champions during the 2025 regular season. The kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. ET (local time) at Mercedes‑Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Alabama enters the game at 10-2 (7-1 SEC), having clinched the spot by winning the Iron Bowl. Georgia enters at 11-1 (7-1 SEC) and earned the SEC East tiebreaker that sent them to Atlanta for the title game. Historically, Alabama has dominated Georgia in SEC title games (4-0).

It remains to be seen if Georgia can turn the tide and become back-to-back SEC champions.
