Alabama QB Ty Simpson announced his decision to enter the 2026 NFL Draft after losing the College Football Quarterfinals against Indiana in the Rose Bowl, ending their season after a 10-3 record in Kalen DeBoer’s second season with the program.
Simpson spent three years with the Crimson Tide program in total, two of which were as a backup, and his final year in 2025 saw him transition to a starter.
In his farewell video posted on Instagram, Simpson shared that he is grateful for every single second spent with the program and while it wasn’t perfect, every moment had meaning, affirming that he gave his all.
During a recent episode on “The Todd McShay” show, analyst Steve Muench offered his blunt opinion on Simpson’s decision to declare the NFL Draft. He said (2:00):
“Great kid, talented player, has a chance to be a really good NFL quarterback, but we know this kind of decision goes against the grain of what we understand.
You know, quarterbacks that stay in college longer are generally more successful. We’ve talked about it.
“The longer you stay, the better off you are. and we’re gonna get into where he could go and what that all that stuff and what his dad said. I get all that. What’s your best chance at long-term success? And I’m rooting for him. I want him to have long-term success and that’s going back to school. So, I’m not loving the decision right now. And I don’t mean to be a negative. But that’s kind of how I feel,” he added.

Kalen DeBoer Shares Why Ty Simpson Didn’t Return to Indiana Game
During the Indiana game, Simpson was only able to play one series in the second half and was then replaced by Redshirt sophomore Austin Mack who played in the rest of the game that led to the 38-3 loss.
The Alabama QB took a hit on fumble in the first half and faced an injury with a cracked rib and then left the field soon after the incident.
Talking about why Simpson didn’t return to the game, Kalen DeBoer said that while he really did want to make a comeback, he couldn’t despite being treated at halftime.
“I know he feels like he let down the team, and there’s no way that that’s the case. He went out there and tried to battle. That’s who he is. I’m never going to let that be a thing where he let us down in any way, so making sure he knows that,” DeBoer said.
The Indiana loss was Alabama’s worst postseason game loss in the program history.
