In a significant move for the West Virginia men’s basketball team, North Texas forward and AAC 6th Man of the Year winner Brenen Lorient has committed to the Mountaineers. The 6’9″ forward announced his decision on Tuesday, April 8, following a standout junior season where he averaged 11.7 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 57.9% from the field.
Lorient’s commitment comes shortly after his former North Texas coach, Ross Hodge, accepted the head coaching position at WVU. The Florida native’s decision to follow Hodge to Morgantown was widely anticipated by basketball analysts, with prediction services giving WVU over 95% confidence to land him earlier this month.

Ross Hodge-Brenen Lorient Connection Drives Decision
Forward Brenen Lorient’s reunion with newly hired West Virginia coach Ross Hodge extends a partnership that yielded tremendous results during their single season together at North Texas.
Under Hodge’s guidance, Lorient transformed from a bench player at Florida Atlantic to one of the AAC’s most impactful performers, earning First-Team All-AAC honors alongside his Sixth Man recognition.

Lorient’s basketball journey reflects persistent growth from leading Forest High School to a 6A state semifinal appearance to winning a state championship at Calvary Christian Academy.
After two limited-role seasons at FAU, including being part of their 2023 Final Four team, Lorient found his stride at North Texas. His exceptional athleticism earned him the description of a “ridiculous athlete” with a crazy vertical hop.
Mountaineer fans can expect an athletic force in Lorient, whose highlight reel plays regularly attracted attention during his breakout season. His defensive versatility with 1.1 blocks, 0.9 steals per game, and efficient scoring around the rim made him a consistent difference-maker for North Texas during their 25-11 campaign.
Beyond statistics, Lorient brings valuable experience to a rebuilding WVU roster. His one remaining year of eligibility will be crucial for Hodge’s first season at the helm.
While primarily serving as North Texas’ sixth man, Lorient’s production suggests he could compete for a starting role in Morgantown, potentially as a power forward in Hodge’s defensive-oriented system.
