Riley Leonard was born on Sept. 13, 2002, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and raised in Fairhope, Alabama, with his brothers Cole and Devin. His parents, Chad and Heather, are both from Washington, D.C., and met in high school. Chad attended Gonzaga Prep while Heather attended Georgetown Visitation.
Chad Leonard played Division I basketball at The Citadel from 1992 to 1995, where he established the school record for steals. After college, he became a golf professional, working at Rivertowne Country Club and Patriots Point.
Heather Leonard obtained a degree in special education from the College of Charleston and worked as the director of education at the Sylvan Learning Centre before focusing on raising their family.
From Basketball Dreams to Football Stardom
Riley initially wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps by playing basketball. He excelled in both basketball and football at Fairhope High School, earning many Division I basketball scholarship offers.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic limited his exposure to basketball circuits, prompting him to focus on football. Riley committed to Duke University with the encouragement of his coaches and family, where he made an immediate impact before moving to Notre Dame.

Heather Leonard started a ritual of texting Riley “You suck” before each game as a humorous but effective way to keep him grounded.
This inside joke began in high school to combat Riley’s continuous praise and remind him to remain humble and focused.
