5 Active College Football Players Who Have Transferred the Most

The spring transfer portal opened on Wednesday, which offered hundreds of college football players new teams to sign with, new opportunities, and new chances to shine. This could mean more playing time for the players, more money for the players in NIL, or simply put, a fresh start.

Some players are much more familiar with the transfer portal than others. Several are looking for their fourth or even fifth school, some after being at their most recent stop for three or four months.

So, who are five active college football players who have made the transfer portal their home away from home?

These Journeymen Have Made the Most Stops Across the College Football Landscape

    Rashad Amos, RB

Amos is looking for his fifth college after being a three-star prospect in 2020. He’s about to embark upon his sixth college season and is now entering his fourth trip to the transfer portal.

Amos signed with South Carolina out of Sandy Creek High School, but played in just 13 games over his three seasons with the Gamecocks. He transferred to Miami (OH) for the 2023 season and found a suitable home there. He played a pivotal role in the MAC Championship Redhawks team.

However, once that season ended, Amos tried his luck in the portal again. He eventually committed to Ole Miss following his commitments to Mississippi State and Colorado. Amos was back in the SEC in 2024 with Ole Miss before transferring to Memphis in December. That was a short-lived marriage, as he is once again in the portal as of this week.

    Jake Garcia, QB

The second player who’s lived in the transfer portal for the better part of four years is Jake Garcia. Garcia was a highly coveted recruit who ranked in the top 50 in the 2021 recruiting cycle. He gained notoriety for attending five different high schools, and that has since followed him to college.

Garcia is now looking to join his fourth college program. He started his career at Miami, signing when Rhett Lashlee was the offensive coordinator and Manny Diaz was the head coach. He left after two seasons and transferred to Missouri the following season.

After not attempting a pass for Missouri, he once again tested the portal and landed at East Carolina. Garcia finally earned a starting job with the Pirates, where he struggled, which led to Katin Houser taking over. So, he’s once again on the hunt for his next starting job.

    Tre’Quon Fegans, DB

Fegans was a top-150 prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle. He signed with Alabama but didn’t play a snap during his freshman season. He transferred to USC for the 2023 season, where he would play sparingly. Fegans once again tested the portal waters.

He landed at UCF but appeared in just eight games and made only two tackles. The Knights underwent a coaching change, which led to Fegan’s wanting out. Now he’s looking to find his fourth program in as many years.

    Alton McCaskill, RB

burst onto the scene in the 2021 season when he rushed for 961 yards and 16 touchdowns during his true freshman season at Houston. The former three-star prospect was named AAC rookie of the year. However, things haven’t been the same for him since he tore his ACL in spring practice, forcing him to miss all of 2022.

McCaskill entered the portal after that season and was viewed as a pretty significant addition for Sanders in his first offseason as Colorado’s head coach. However, McCaskill had a down year, finishing with just 59 yards. He left Colorado for Arizona State.

This was far from ideal since Cam Skattebo took on a big part of the workload in ASU. Now, McCaskill is looking to reach his 2021 form again with a new home.

    Mike Wright, QB

The fifth and final journeyman in college football comes to us as a former Northwestern quarterback. Mike Wright, who was a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, signed with Vanderbilt after flipping from UCF. He started 11 games over his first two seasons, including Vanderbilt’s only two SEC wins over that stretch.

Despite being limited as a passer, he displayed strengths as a rusher, picking up 905 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in three seasons. Wright made an interesting decision to transfer to Mississippi State for the 2023 season, even though Will Rogers was an experienced starter already on the roster.

Wright appeared in all 12 games that season and made three starts when Rogers was injured. He transferred to Northwestern and started the first two games of the season before being benched after an overtime loss to Duke in Week 2.

Wright preserved a season of eligibility because he played only three games in 2024. Now he’s on the move again and is reportedly open to a position change.
